A huge blackboard can be found in almost every classroom. However, schoolbooks are often missing, notebooks are a rare treasure, and pens are guarded like precious belongings.
Teachers in rural areas are often paid very poorly – sometimes not at all. Their qualifications vary greatly: some have studied at one of the country’s three national universities, while others have been ‘appointed’ as village teachers in the traditional way, without formal training.
There are many schools in rural areas as well. The buildings are constructed in the typical local style – without windows and with breathable walls. Since electricity is often unavailable, fans wouldn’t work anyway. As a result, despite some airflow, the rooms are often unbearably hot, making it very difficult to concentrate and learn.
