Sketch: Eco-Village Kukualile, Ghana

This village development-programm aims for better lifestyle and sustainable development in rural Ghana. Kukualile – a village along Ankobra River (Western Ghana) will be developed as an eco-village within Global Ecovillage Network (GEN). The projects refers to a teachers‘-workshop by Angelika and Ditmar Bachmann (Germany, Munich) in cooperation the GES (Ghana Education Service) and Ankobra Beach Ltd. ,where teachers had been trained how to implement education for sustainability in the curriculum and how to activate pupils. The teacher-training was part of a waste-management-programm that has been started in 2017 – by Ankobra Beach Ltd. ARTIC and Nzema Mine (contacts see below). The program now planned for this village involves all persons of the place: parents, other adults - especially the village administration and the chiefs. The village-people will be motivated to a responsible protection of their environment. Some touristic attractions will generate income for the sake of the village. This fossile-energy free model-village – is intended to be an example for other rural regions with poor income by training other teachers in order to be capable to multiply it. A crowd-funding campaign or financial support is necessary for a comprehensive support for the school and invest in renewable energies – especially a biogas-plant and roof-top solar-cells for electricity.  Donate 10 € per Brick – get your signiture on the brick and be part of the new built „visitor-area“ in Kukualile. Donators will be invited to two journeys (August 2019, August 2021) – so they can see progress of the project. Maybe there will be investment of young start ups to accelerate development of the village.

Where is the village?

Without Money - BUT with success!

As a member of the Ghanaian Eco-Village-Network (GEN) there will be support in different ways. The village-people could easily start without any money - only by demonstration traditional way of living or handcrafts to visitors.

  • traditional building out of dried clay-bricks – the names of „donators“ engraved. The bricks will be used to build a „visitor-area“ with two small huts for information and accomodation and a shadowy „picnick-place“
  • innovative building of a house out of PET-bottle-bricks, filled with anorganic (waste) material
  • how to cover a round hut with a roof from straw
  • carving walls to show the calender
  • production of Shea-Butter
  • products of Moringa trees (powder, leaves, oil, body lotion)
  • how to gain treatment-powder from curing roots of curing trees, pounded in a mortar
  • the way of „up-cycling“ waste:
    • manufacturing shopping-bags from plastic-yarn („plarn“) or water-satches or chains out of small square cutted pieces of PET-Bottles
    • how to prepare traditional food (FUFU, RED-RED..)

Tourists may be Shown the village’s conscious for environmental protection and health-care

  • Latrines (compost toilets) for every three families (according to national action plan for safe water)
  • separation of Waste in DOOBs (Dustbins out of Bamboo)
  • fertilize fields with compost of organic waste - enrich soil with fertilizer (bamboo-vinegar from Ankobra Farms)
  • clean suitable rubber/plastic waste for upcycling-products
  • burn unsuitable rubber/plastic waste for gaining engine-fuel out of it
  • general „waste-collecting-Sunday“ every second week
  • A covered, enfenced community bor-hole
  • use of „AfriClay“ filters to purify the water from the well and purification with Moringa seeds ("wonder-tree-seeds")
  • proof of regular testing oft he quality of water (in cooperation with local water-analysis-lab)

visitors are invited

  • to have a short rest in a „tree-cafe“ (nicely furnished place with wooden-stools)
  •  drink a homemade lemonade out of lemon, sugar-cane, boiled water
  •  have a cup of herbal tea in self-cooling clay-cups
  •  watch a traditional drumming-performance from especially trained children of the village
  •  Have their hair woven in a traditional style
  • stay over night in a simple but very clean hut gather in a circle with women from the village, and listen to traditional story-telling (translated into English)
  • serve a basic dinner with fish out oft he village-pond and a little breakfast

Teach and participate

  • students to intensify their efforts on „waste-management“ solutions and problemsolving
  • parents and other village-people in measures planned for waste-management on becoming an eco-village
  • all village authorities to take part in the programm
  • fellow teachers in ordert o make the programm known to all classes in school
  • multiplayer (other teachers) that they become curious of this programm and can adjust it to their places

Promote development of the village by

  • printing poster and information-material for the public
  • Installing a website
